Panaji: With the southwest monsoon showing signs of rejuvenation, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji recorded the highest rainfall of 19.9mm during the last 24 hours till Saturday morning since July 28. It also forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places on the weekend.
After torrential rain during the peak season month of July that recorded 1,836.2mm, as compared to a normal of 1015.2mm for the month, the decline in monsoon activity meant that hardly 100mm was recorded in three weeks.
On July 27, IMD, Panaji recorded a state average rainfall of 87.8mm during a 24-hour phase. This was followed by 23.1mm on July 28 and gradual decline in monsoon activity.
In a welcome change of weather, the quantum of rainfall during the last two days has increased, as the meteorological centre had recorded a daily average of 13.4mm in 24 hours till Friday morning, adding 33.3mm to the seasonal total in two days.
The intensity of the rain increased further from Saturday afternoon and as per figures, Old Goa recorded 42.5mm, Margao 29.5mm and Mormugao 24mm from 8.30am to 5.30pm.
During the widespread rain in the last 24 hours, Quepem recorded the highest of 37.2mm, Canacona 35.2mm, Mapusa 23mm, Old Goa 21.5mm, Ponda 20mm, Panaji 15mm, Pernem 10.8mm and other centres on a lesser scale. The figures of rainfall in Valpoi, Margao and Sanguem were not available. On the weekend, the seasonal total touched 2,617.3mm while at this stage a total of 2490.5mm is considered normal. The overall seasonal surplus of 26.8% – monthly surplus in July was 75.4% - has shrunk to 5.1%.
A low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coasts moved west northwestwards toward north Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood.
